In 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1 into deep space.

It is still travelling. More than 24 billion kilometres from Earth, beyond the edge of our solar system, in the space between stars. It sends back signals that take over 22 hours to reach us. The team that receives them is smaller now. Some of the original engineers are gone. The machine keeps going.

The people who built it knew they were making something that would outlast everyone involved in making it. That no one would ever hold it again after it left the launchpad. They built it anyway, to the highest standard they were capable of, for an audience they would never meet, carrying a record of who we are into a darkness they would never see.

There is a version of making that asks nothing back. That does not require validation to justify the effort. That is simply complete in itself because it was built correctly and sent forward.
